Vice Presidents are often thought of as history’s bridesmaids, forever waiting their turn at the altar. In reality, 14 of them have eventually ascended to the top job. When the National Portrait Gallery asked us to help tell their stories, we jumped at the chance.

Since the NPG has visitors of all ages, they needed a way to display high-resolution photos, collages, and interviews in a Flash site that would scale to even the smallest and slowest of PCs. Our solution was to build an interactive timeline featuring deep-linked pictures that look good on any size monitor. We built a separate section for the videos—up close and personal interviews with living Vice Presidents—that play seamlessly and give the user a sense of what it’s like to be a heartbeat away from becoming leader of the free world.
